24 new Startups By Marcelo Calbucci

 

    Wow, Seattle has way more startups than we thought. During Amazon's The Start-Up Project they gave a list of attendees and their companies. I combed through it and added 24 new startups to the companies list.

 

    Some of those new companies are in stealth mode, some are in alpha or beta, or some were just hidden from the rest of us for no good reason.

 

    Remember if you have a startup (or are about to create one), make sure that you are found even if you don't tell what you do.

SSI: Seattle Startups Index (April edition) By Marcelo Calbucci

 

    It is the last of the month again, and this time we are not only listing the Seattle Startups ordered by their Alexa Ranking, but we are also showing the delta between this list and last month's.

 

    By the way, we are giving this Seattle-only ranking a name: Seattle Startup Index (SSI).

 

    Not a lot of movement on the top 12, but the rest is changing a lot. This time we also have a lot more companies.

 

    The biggest increase in the Index is Yapta, moving 19 positions to number 60. The biggest decrease is Melodeo dropping 26 positions to number 71, however, 7 of those 26 points drop are because of new companies that were added to the list.

Should the Seattle (Alexa) Index also include BigCos? By Marcelo Calbucci

 

    The question is simple. We created the Seattle Startup Index, but companies that have been in the market for a while, or are publicly traded are not being listed. Is it fair that we are not really listing Amazon.com, Microsoft, Real Networks and other great companies from the Puget Sound?

 

    One side of the coin tells me this index is more interesting with Tech Startups only. The other side tells it is incomplete without all the companies.

 

    What do you think?

 

    We have basic 4 options:

1. Track only Tech Startups: the site is the service/product
2. Track only Startups: include companies that are brick-and-mortar and the site is just a marketing/sales channel, or service providers (consultants), etc.
3. Track only Tech companies: From startups to publicly traded companies, but only from the tech sector.
4. Track all Puget Sound companies.

    Number four would be quite a task since I don't even know where to get this list from. Not only that, but it would be a weird mix of Sampa compared to Amazon compared to Weyerhaeuser compared to Immunex compared to Boeing.
