Unveiling the new Seattle 2.0 Logo

By Marcelo Calbucci

A new website redesign has been in the works for month and it might still take a few more months, but today we are unveiling a logo for the Seattle 2.0 blog as a result of the contest we did early in the year.

The winner logo came from Chris Adams from Rocketman Illustration. Chris went above and beyond and didn't treat this as a contest, but he treated us as a client and we went through 5 iterations of the logo before we got to a point where it seemed to fit.

Without further ado, this is the new Seattle 2.0 logo...

Chris went one step further and also created a FAVICON for us:

I hope people enjoy this new logo, but you won't be seeing it integrated into this ugly version of the site. We'll wait until the new website comes out to use this logo.

The blue swoop is quite nice, graceful, much nicer than the curves I tried to draw when I was noodling around. It works.

But, to me, that's the only good part. Well, almost. I like the choice of the font for the "S" and I like the favicon.

All the extra touches in the EATTLE and the dot in the A -- it's too much. It's distracting. You have this graceful, wave-like shape and then you have these abrupt edges and angles. As I've written (http://www.thisuser.com/2008/03/one-thing-about-logos.html), a great logo should have *one thing* that defines it. This logo is trying to do too much.

I don't recognize the font, so I'm going to guess it was custom-tweaked. To me, the letters look irregular and off-balance. They don't belong here. In contrast, the S and the 2.0 are great. Their weight and varying thickness match the swoop very nicely. You should use the rest of the letters from that font.

The swoop tells me that Chris is a good artist (and I can see from his web site that he's done some great work). But he needed to stop designing this one a bit earlier.
